If The Shoe Fits Week 2 waders
series overview
What do our shoes say about us? Whether it’s a pair of work-boots, crocs, flip-flops, loafers, vans, or soccer cleats – each scuff, detail, and well-worn sole provides a glimpse into who we are and where we’re going. We invite you to join us on this journey as we step into the shoes of those whose lives were touched by Jesus. Let their stories fill you with hope and inspire us all to live with courage and purpose.

Waders
Sermon Summary
In the sermon “Waders”, Mike Breaux addresses failure as an inevitable part of life, with our hope found in how God walks with us through our mistakes. One of Jesus’ closest followers, Peter, has a spiritual journey that moves from failure to redemption that can help anyone resurface after a season of failure. Peter’s life motivates individuals to embrace their failures, seek forgiveness, and find new hope in God’s unconditional love and grace for us.

What was the most awkward thing you ever mistakenly said or did? How did you smooth over what happened?
DISCUSSion
Select 3-4 questions from the list below to guide your discussion time.
- 1 Corinthians 10:12 (Msg) says, “Don’t be so naïve and self-confident. You’re not exempt. You could fall flat on your face as easily as anyone else”. Have you (or someone you know) ever felt exempt from failure to the point that it actually caused them to fail?
- Read Matthew 26:75 and Proverbs 28:13. Why is it important to own up to our failures and seek forgiveness?
- Read Galatians 6:1-3. How has being part of a small group or church community helped you work through your failures?
- John 21 tells the story of Jesus reinstating Peter after denying Jesus. Peter literally jumps into the water and swims to shore to get to Jesus. Read 2 Corinthians 7:10, which says that godly sorrow leaves no regret. Using Judas as an example of worldly sorrow and Peter of godly sorrow, what do you think is the difference between the two?
- Mike quoted Vance Havner when he said, “God uses broken things. It takes broken soil to produce a crop, broken clouds to give rain, broken grain to give bread, broken bread to give strength. It is the broken alabaster box that gives forth perfume. It is Peter, weeping bitterly, who returns to greater power than ever.” Have you ever experienced the power that came from a time of brokenness in your life? How so?
WRAP UP & PRAYER

- Ask God to help someone you know “fail forward” as Peter did.
- Pray for peace for anyone in your group that has been broken by something.
