When Adversity Overwhelms

The Story of Joseph

Sermon Summary

In this week’s message, Gene discusses the importance of having God as the anchor for our souls during life’s storms. He shares the story of Joseph, who faced immense adversity, yet maintained his faith in God, proving that God was with him throughout his trials. Gene emphasizes that true anchors are crucial because alternative sources such as money or popularity are unreliable. Today’s discussion will help everyone reflect on the strength and weight of whatever anchor they are using to stabilize themselves during the storms of life.

ice breaker

If you were marooned on a desert island, what is the one item you would choose to have to have with you in the following three categories:

  • Clothing
  • Tool
  • Entertainment

Share why you think these items would help you get through the challenge of life as a castaway.

DISCUSSion

Select 3-4 questions from the list below to guide your discussion time.

  1. Brainstorm a list of at least 5 common anchors people hold onto during difficult times. Why do you think these are considered so strong and helpful? What are their particular vulnerabilities? What are some anchors in your life that you rely on, and how might you shift your focus to trust God and his promises more deeply instead?
  2. What does it mean to have God as the ‘ANCHOR FOR THE SOUL’ as mentioned in Hebrews 6:19? Can you think of a time in your life when you felt overwhelmed? How could having God as your anchor have changed (or did change) your perspective or actions during that time?
  3. Read Genesis 37:3-8. This passage illustrates the dysfunction of Joseph’s family and how jealousy led to significant issues in their relationships. How do you think jealousy affects relationships in your own life? Does any area of jealousy reveal what your perceived anchor in life might be?
  4. In the story of Joseph, he was unjustly accused of attempted rape by his boss’s wife and thrown in prison. Genesis 39:20-23 reveals Joseph’s anchor during his time in prison and what resulted. Have you ever faced a situation where you felt alone or forgotten? How can you remind yourself of God’s presence during those times?
  5. In Gene’s message, he shares the story of the Chicago lawyer who wrote ‘It Is Well with My Soul.’ Has a piece of music or art ever helped you process grief and adversity? If so, how so?
