When Financial Storms Hit

The Story of Joseph

Sermon Summary

In this week’s message, Gene discusses the importance of having God as the anchor for our souls during life’s storms. He shares the story of Joseph, who faced immense adversity, yet maintained his faith in God, proving that God was with him throughout his trials. Gene emphasizes that true anchors are crucial because alternative sources such as money or popularity are unreliable. Today’s discussion will help everyone reflect on the strength and weight of whatever anchor they are using to stabilize themselves during the storms of life.

DISCUSSion

Select 3-4 questions from the list below to guide your discussion time.

  1. Remembering how Joseph got Egypt through a famine in Genesis 41:8-36, reflect on a financial challenge you’ve faced or are currently facing. How has saving (or not saving) for emergencies impacted you in that situation?

  2. Having wise counsel and a good plan can elevate your life in very powerful ways. Read how that happened for Joseph in Genesis 41:37-46. Do you have any kind of financial plan? How can you implement a plan that would help others you love in the season ahead like Joseph was able to do? Has having a plan ever elevated your status in some way, like Joseph’s?

  3. Creating margin in Egypt’s grain consumption was a major part of Joseph’s plan. What does it mean to create financial margin in your life right now? Looking at your own spending habits, what specific actions can you take to create more financial margin for yourself?

  4. Read Genesis 41:53-57. Joseph leveraged what he had saved to help others during the famine, showing the power of generosity. Think about a way you can use your resources, even if small, to help someone else. How might that act of generosity change your perspective on your finances?

  5.  Joseph humbly reminded himself of where he’d come from and how far he had come in a very specific and permanent way in Genesis 41:47-52. How would you describe how far you have come? What are some ways you could remember that in a way that would pass to the next generation?
