When Temptation Knocks

The Story of Joseph

Sermon Summary

Despite persistent temptation, Joseph remains steadfast, recognizing that giving in to temptation would not only betray Potiphar’s trust but be a great sin against God. His example shows that staying anchored in moments of moral testing comes from a clear sense of purpose and a commitment to maintaining one’s relationship with God.

DISCUSSion

Select 3-4 questions from the list below to guide your discussion time.

  1. The message highlighted that being anchored means connecting to the rock-solid One, Jesus Christ, who never changes. Read Hebrews 6:19 and Genesis 39:2. What do you think it means to be anchored to God, as Joseph was? Can you think of a time when you felt like you were drifting away from God? How did you find your way back?

  2. Read Psalm 119:11. Why do you think Joseph’s act of drawing a line in his heart was so crucial in resisting temptation? What new lines do you think you should draw in your own heart to stay true to your values and beliefs right now?

  3. Read I Corinthians 10:12-13. How does understanding that temptation is universal help us deal with our own personal struggles? What is a temptation you face, and how can knowing others struggle with the same thing help you address it?

  4. Reread verse 12 of 1 Corinthians 10. Look at it in 3 different versions of the Bible if you can. The message discussed strategies like avoiding vulnerable situations to help minimize opportunities for temptation. What specific changes could you make in your routine or relationships to help reduce the chances of giving in to temptation?

  5. Read Proverbs 6:26 and Proverbs 6:32. Why is it important to magnify the long-term consequences of our actions when faced with temptation? Can you think of a situation where considering the long-term consequences helped you make a better choice?
