Recalculating Week 1
Sermon Summary
Gene discussed the importance of recalculating our relationship with our owns souls and with money in the context of spiritual well-being. He shares a parable from Luke 12:13-21 about a wealthy man who mistakenly believes that his possessions will provide self-worth, security, and satisfaction, ultimately leading to his downfall. Gene emphasizes that true life cannot be found in material wealth, but in other things that God provides and points us to. He invites all of us to reflect on what we value and encourages us to participate in wise financial management (FPU groups can help), worship and authentic community for spiritual recalibration.
ice breaker
If you could calculate any number in your life, what would it be? (pieces of pizza eaten, money spent on coffee, how many times you had to remind someone to do something, etc.)
DISCUSSion
Select 3-4 questions from the list below to guide your discussion time.
- Gene talked about 3 needs of every soul: self-worth, security and satisfaction. Which one of these has been the biggest struggle of your soul over the course of your life? How have you coped with that?
- What do you think Jesus meant when He said, ‘Life does not consist in an abundance of possessions’ in Luke 12:15? Can you think of a time when you focused on obtaining an item or an achievement, only to realize later that it didn’t deliver what you thought it would for you?
- Read Luke 12:16-21. In your estimation, what was the fatal flaw in the thinking of the rich man in this passage? What is that antidote for this flaw?
- Discuss the idea of ‘security’ mentioned in the sermon. What does true security look like or feel like for you? Read Philippians 4:12-19. Considering Paul’s learnings, what steps can you take to cultivate a sense of security that doesn’t depend on material wealth?
- Read 1 Timothy 6:6-7. What activities or relationships in your life have brought you genuine satisfaction? How can you prioritize these more?
