Guarding our hearts against pride
KINGSLAYER
series overview
Just like the FBI and CIA scan for threats to national security, we need to be on high alert for threats in our own lives. Spiritually, what we’re up against isn’t always visible. Enemy tactics are subtle, strategic, and deadly. In this four week series, we’ll dig into the lives of several biblical kings who were taken out—not by an external force, but from the inside out. Pride. Envy. Disobedience. These silent assassins slipped past their defenses and left destruction in their wake. Join us as we expose these threats and learn how to guard our hearts, stay alert, and win the battle against these “Kingslayers.”
Week #1
King Nebuchadnezzar
Sermon Summary
This sermon explores the powerful story of King Nebuchadnezzar’s humbling in Daniel 4, where God brought down the proud ruler who claimed credit for his own achievements. The message warns against pride—defined as “Edging God Out” (EGO)—and shows how God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Through Nebuchadnezzar’s seven-year judgment and eventual restoration, we learn that the Most High rules over all kingdoms and gives them to anyone He chooses. The sermon challenges us to examine how pride disguises itself in our lives and to follow Christ’s example of humility.

Before we focus on the issue of pride, share one of the most outlandish and humorous embarrassing moments you have ever experienced.
DISCUSSion
Select 3-4 questions from the list below to guide your discussion time.
- The Tree Dream: In Daniel 4:20-22, Daniel interprets Nebuchadnezzar’s dream about a great tree. How do you think Nebuchadnezzar felt hearing that he was the tree destined to be cut down? What does this teach us about receiving difficult feedback about ourselves? Have you ever had an unproductive reaction to difficult feedback? How did that turn out?
- Pride’s Disguises: Mike encouraged us to ask ourselves, “How does pride DISGUISE itself in me?” Pride often masquerades as confidence, independence, or even religious devotion. What are some subtle ways that pride might be operating in your life that you haven’t recognized before?
- The Moment of Judgment: Have you ever made a boastful statement that got called out immediately? In Daniel 4:31-33, judgment came while Nebuchadnezzar was boasting about “MY vast kingdom…MY great city.” Why do you think God chose that specific moment to act? What does this reveal about how our words and attitudes matter to God?
- Christ’s Humility: Philippians 2:5-7 describes how Jesus “made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant.” How does Christ’s example of humility challenge our natural tendency toward pride and self-promotion? What is an impactful time that you simply served someone, and what difference do you think that made?
- Personal Application: The message ended with the question, “How much longer am I going to let ME control me?” What is one area where you struggle to give up control that you could get support and prayer for from the group?
WRAP UP & PRAYER
Pray for one another, keeping some of these requests in mind based on Psalm 23:
- Humility Over Pride: Pray for God to reveal hidden pride in our hearts and give us the courage to humble ourselves before Him, following Christ’s example of servanthood.
- Surrender of Control: Ask God to help us release our grip on the main areas where we’re trying to maintain control instead of trusting and following His leadership.
- Grace for the Humble: Pray that we would experience God’s grace as we choose humility, and that He would use our surrendered lives to bring glory to His name.
- Recognition of God’s Rule: Pray for a deeper understanding that “the Most High rules over the kingdoms of the world” (Daniel 4:17) and pray for specific nations that are experiencing hardship and need today.
