COURAGEOUS PRAYERS

Sermon Summary

Courageous Prayers examines five of David’s bold prayers. He highlights that honest prayers deepen our relationship with God, using David’s examples from Psalms. Gene encourages praying with a courageous authenticity, vulnerability, and incorporating these prayers into your average day to experience God’s grace, strength, forgiveness, and guidance.

ice breaker

If you could only eat one type of food for the rest of your life, what would it be and why? How soon do you think it would take before you got tired of it?

Praying only one type of prayer can be similar to eating only one kind of food. Today we’ll be learning from David a variety of courageous prayers to expand the kind of prayers you take to God on a daily basis.

DISCUSSion

Select 3-4 questions from the list below to guide your discussion time.

  1. Read Psalm 22:1-2, 4-6. Have you ever been in a circumstance that made you ask, “Why me” like David did? Describe what got you to that point. What is reaction to Jesus praying that prayer from the cross in Matthew 27:45-46?

  2. Read  Psalm 70:1,5. When have you prayed the “Help me” prayer and God showed up dramatically to do just that?

  3. Read David’s “Search me” prayer in Psalm 139:23-24. Do you think David asked God to search him because he didn’t know what was already in his heart? If not, what was the purpose?

  4. What impresses you about the different ways that David prays the “Forgive me” prayer in Psalm 51:1-3? What phrase stands out to you the most? Why?

  5. Lead me is probably David’s most risky and courageous prayer. How would you describe where David is asking God to lead him in Psalm 61:2? How does that affect any fears you may have in praying this prayer?
