SERMON TITLE
King Richard
Sermon Summary
King Richard is the true story about a father from Compton, California with a vision to see his daughters avoid the pitfalls of their peers and become professional tennis players. Richard realizes that if his girls are going to excel at tennis, their games will need to be constantly developed from a young age. So, he writes a step-by-step success plan for how his daughters would grow in the sport. His determination and love for his daughters teach a lot about what it takes to help those you live reach new heights.
WARM UP
Did you ever have a coach that was hard on you but brought out the best in you?
DISCUSSion
Select 5-6 questions from the list below to guide your discussion time.
- Richard Williams wanted his daughters to be different. Followers of Jesus know they have a Father who wants the same for them. Read 2 Corinthians 6:17-18. What specific areas do you think we should be different from in today’s culture? How do we do that in a way like Jesus did, without making others feel judged?
- Richard was dismissed as a delusional dad. Have you ever been dismissed like that? Read 1 Samuel 16:7. Have you ever unintentionally dismissed someone you should have believed in more?
- Read Ephesians 6:4 about parenting. How did your parents do in relationship to this instruction? If you are a parent, how have you done?
- Read Galatians 6:9. Richard Williams had three things in addition to his desires for his children: discipline, determination, and a plan. Which are you strongest in? Which would you like to improve in? What is one step you could take to accomplish that, even if you are not a parent and want to apply this in another area of life?
