4 Practical Ways to Understand the Bible

Have you ever found yourself desperate to hear from God—about a decision, a season, or a situation that feels overwhelming—yet struggled to sense His direction?

You’re not alone.

At some point, every one of us reaches a crossroads where the stakes feel high. A job decision. A relationship. A financial challenge. A season of loss. A moment of desperation where we quietly wonder, God, are You speaking? And if You are… how do I hear You?

The good news is this: God is not silent. The question is rarely about God’s volume—it’s about our reception.

Many of us want God’s guidance, but instead of listening for His voice, we default to other strategies.

Sometimes, we try to figure it out ourselves. We weigh pros and cons, replay conversations in our heads, and rush into decisions without ever slowing down long enough to ask God for wisdom.

Other times, we follow our emotions. If it feels good, we assume it must be right. If it feels hard, we assume it must be wrong. But emotions are unreliable guides. They can be shaped by stress, fatigue, fear, or even what we watched the night before.

Some of us trust coincidences. We look for signs in stoplights, timing, or random circumstances, hoping they’ll magically reveal God’s will.

And still others assume that if everything is “smooth as silk,” God must be in it. But Scripture is full of examples—like Joseph—where God’s will unfolded through difficulty, not ease.

Jesus addressed this struggle directly when He said that people sometimes “have ears but can barely hear.” The issue wasn’t that God stopped speaking. It was that hearts had grown dull. In a noisy world filled with notifications, distractions, and constant input, our spiritual hearing can weaken.

So how do we hear God clearly?

The Clearest Way God Speaks

The clearest way God speaks is through His Word—the Bible. The Bible isn’t just a collection of ancient writings. It is God-breathed. When God breathed into Adam, he became a living being. When God breathed into Scripture, it became living words—words that still speak today.

The Apostle Paul in 2 Timothy 3:16–17 says, “Every part of Scripture is God-breathed and useful one way or another—showing us truth, exposing our rebellion, correcting our mistakes, training us to live God’s way. Through the Word we are put together and shaped up for the tasks God has for us.”

The Bible doesn’t merely inform us; it transforms us. It shows us what’s true when truth feels blurry. It exposes the subtle ways we drift from God. It corrects us when we’re off course. And it trains us to live in a way that leads to freedom and life.

If you want to hear God’s voice with clarity, Scripture is the place to begin.

How To Hear God While Reading The Bible

Knowing the Bible matters—but engaging it consistently is what allows God’s voice to shape our lives. Here are four practical ways to begin.

1. Choose a Bible Translation You Can Understand

God’s voice shouldn’t feel locked behind confusing language. If the translation you’re reading feels difficult to follow, it’s okay to choose one that speaks more clearly in today’s language.

Many people find the New International Version (NIV) or the New Living Translation (NLT) especially helpful. The goal isn’t to sound spiritual—it’s to understand what God is saying.

2. Choose a Consistent Time and Place

Spiritual growth happens through rhythm. Choose a regular time and place where you can read without distractions.

For some, that’s early morning. For others, it’s during lunch or after the house is quiet at night. There’s no “right” time—just a consistent one.

Studies have shown that engaging Scripture at least four times a week has a profound impact on spiritual growth, emotional health, and faith in action. Consistency matters more than duration.

3. Use a Bible Reading Plan

A reading plan removes guesswork and builds momentum. Instead of wondering what to read, you can focus on listening.

The YouVersion Bible App offers thousands of free plans—covering everything from anxiety and forgiveness to reading the entire Bible in a year.

Reading with a plan helps Scripture move from something you intend to read to something you actually live by.

4. Pray and Ask God for One Thing to Apply

Before you read, pray a simple prayer:
“God, show me one thing You want me to apply today.”

Don’t aim for ten changes. Aim for one obedient step.

God’s Word is often described as a lamp to our feet, not a floodlight for the next five years. It gives us enough light for the next faithful step—and that’s exactly what we need.

The Bible has comforted people in unimaginable pain. There are parents who have walked through devastating loss and found strength in Scripture—not because it explained everything, but because it gave them light for the next step forward.

That’s the power of God’s Word. It doesn’t promise to answer every question, but it promises to walk with us through every season.

And the evidence is overwhelming. The Bible has been translated into nearly 4,000 languages and remains the most widely distributed book in human history. It continues to shape lives because it carries the breath of God.

Hearing God Begins with Listening

If you want to hear God’s voice more clearly, you don’t need to wait for a sign or a feeling. You can open your Bible today and pray the simple prayer Samuel prayed centuries ago:

“Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening.”

God is still speaking. The question is—are we making space to listen?

Our team has compiled some of the most frequently asked questions we get about faith and Christianity as it relates to life, morality, current events, the end of the world, and more.
