21 days of prayer

21 Days of Prayer

During these uncertain times, becoming followers of Jesus who pursue God, build community, and unleash compassion with certainty has never been more important or advantageous.

To increase our capacity to experience this way of life to the fullest, we are setting apart 21 days of focused prayer to allow God to build and express these qualities in us.

As individuals and as families, we are in uncharted territory. It can sometimes feel like we are being called to move forward urgently but without a map. This is not the first time a nation has found itself on the cusp of the unknown, not knowing where to go. We have a detailed record of one of those times. The nation was Israel, and its leader who we’ll be learning from was Moses.

Moses will be our guide for this 21 Days of Prayer into the unknown.

Our prayer guide will center around a worship song Moses wrote (Psalm 90), a story about Moses’ tendency to hide things from others (2 Corinthians, chapter 3), and a tribute written about Moses’ faith in the face of the unknown (Hebrews 11). In the process of using it, we will expand our prayer vocabulary, stretch our hearts, and learn some new kinds of prayer.

Day 8 – 2020

Day 8 A Prayer of Hope hope “to look forward with desire and reasonable confidence; to believe or trust” 2 Corinthians 3:12 The Glory of the New Covenant. 12 Therefore, since we have such a hope, we are very bold.     “Hope sees the invisible, feels the intangible and achieves the impossible.” – Mother Teresa, Albanian/Indian Roman Catholic nun and missionary For some, this season of social distancing has inflamed our bad habits, taken us into the darkness of our past hurts, and reminded us of our hang-ups. While we might have already lived through darkness and conquered it in

Day 7 – 2020

Day 7 A Prayer of Rebuilding re·build·ing “reconstruction” Psalm 90 A prayer of Moses the man of God. 17 May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us;establish the work of our hands for us—yes, establish the work of our hands. “You have your world to rebuild, and I have mine.” – Ransom Riggs, American author and filmmaker So far this week, you have prayed a prayer of acknowledgement, humility, contrition, sobriety, one for mercy, and one for restoration. This last prayer of Moses is one that is often used when someone is dedicating a new business or starting

Day 6 – 2020

Day 6 A Prayer of Restoration res·to·ra·tion “return to the original, unimpaired condition” Psalm 90 A prayer of Moses the man of God. 15 Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, for as many years as we have seen trouble. 16 May your deeds be shown to your servants, your splendor to their children. “You would not ask someone with a broken arm to swim the English Channel, so you cannot demand that the broken live as if they were whole.” – John Eldredge, author, psychologist Our definition of restoration is “returning to an unimpaired condition.” If

Day 5 – 2020

Day 5 A Prayer of Mercy mer·cy  “compassion, easing of distress” Psalm 90 A prayer of Moses the man of God. 13 Relent, Lord! How long will it be? Have compassion on your servants. 14 Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days. “Mean girls go far in high school. Kind women go far in LIFE.” – Mandy Hale, best-selling author When we ask for exception from a penalty we deserve, what we are asking for is mercy. When we ask for exception from a penalty we don’t deserve,

Day 4 – 2020

Day 4 A Prayer of Sobriety so·bri·e·ty  “abstinence, seriousness” Psalm 90 A prayer of Moses the man of God. 10 Our days may come to seventy years,or eighty, if our strength endures;yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away.11 If only we knew the power of your anger!Your wrath is as great as the fear that is your due.12 Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. “Strength of mind rests in sobriety; for this keeps your reason unclouded by passion.”   – Pythagoras, Greek philosopher and mathematician, 6th

Day 3 – 2020

Day 3 A Prayer of Contrition con·tri·tion  “repentance, shame over our past sins” Psalm 90 A prayer of Moses the man of God. 7 We are consumed by your anger and terrified by your indignation. 8 You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence. 9 All our days pass away under your wrath; we finish our years with a moan. “God cannot fix whoever is first not broken.” – Jack Wellman, bi-vocational Brethren pastor, Kansas When we pursue God like this during quarantine, our issues rise to the surface. Things like impatience, misplaced dependencies, words

Day 2 – 2020

Day 2 A Prayer of Humility hu·mil·i·ty “modesty or respectfulness” Psalm 90 A prayer of Moses the man of God. 3 You turn people back to dust, saying, “Return to dust, you mortals.” 4 A thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night. 5 Yet you sweep people away in the sleep of death— they are like the new grass of the morning: 6 In the morning it springs up new, but by evening it is dry and withered. “Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it’s thinking of yourself less.”

Day 1

Week 1: Prayers for Pursuing God while Waiting Henry Ford was 45 when he started a car business. Julia Child was 50 when she got her first cooking show. Moses waited 80 years before his real calling in life emerged. Though he initially resisted this calling, Moses’ willingness to accept leading a nation of slaves into freedom took much, much longer than he’d ever dreamed. In the meantime, turning to God became a habit for Moses for the rest of his life. As Gene Appel walks us through an actual prayer Moses prayed, know these words eventually became lyrics to
